Mendocino Coast History Pomo Indians The Pomo Indians native to the area lived in small villages
along the Coast. First Settlers William Kasten appears to be the first non-Indian settler. He was one of the survivor of a ship wreck in 1850. The next visitor, Jerome Ford arrived on the Coast in search of the shipwreck Frolic sailing to San Francisco from China. Henry Meiggs, a pioneer promoter from San Francisco and the builder of Meiggs Wharf or Fisherman's Wharf organized the overland expedition. Although the location of the Frolic shipwreck was not discovered until the 1980s, they found our large redwood trees. Meiggs organized a ship, Ontario,
and milling equipment and established the first of the many sawmills and lumber companies on the Mendocino Headlands in 1852.
Mendocino David F. Lansing was the Captain of the Ontario and the crew included William. H. Kelley, E. C. Williams and J. E.
Carlson, all early community leaders of Mendocino. Meiggsville was established and was later renamed Mendocino.
